OLED technology and screens

November 11, 2011

Here is an overview of OLED technology which is considered the base of the screens in the near future and beyond.

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diodes (organic light emitting diode), a new flat panel technology, constructed by different thin organic layers in series between two conductors.

By applying electric current will result in a brighter light, but this is not typical of classic backlit LCD displays, and this means that OLED screens have the ability to emit their own light and can be very thin (3mm) and much more efficient energy of the LCD.

How do they work?

An OLED screen is composed of many superimposed layers operating an attraction between positively charged particles enegativamente; when the electric current is apllicata a layer becomes negatively charged relative to another transparent layer, while the energy passes from the cathode (negative) to ' anode (positive), stimulates the organic material present between the two layers that produces visible light through the layer of glass cover.
The organic compounds of which we are speaking, are usually of conductive polymers, are therefore in the organic chemical sense of the term, because an item is defined as the organic structure is composed primarily of carbon. Through appropriate processes, these compounds can be combined to obtain all the shades of the spectrum of visible light.

What are the real advantages over LCD, LED and Plasma?

brighter colors and bright
high contrast of up to 1,000,000 to 1! black is really black!
unlimited viewing angle
response times also much more rapid than 1000 times!
ultra low power consumption
screens of a few mm thick

Eliminate the ghosting?
Yes they are able to eliminate the annoying "ghosting" of a typical LCD response time thanks to a thousand times faster, much appreciated for action movies and video games.

What are the current limitations?

As with many technologies making their debut, the first limit in which you devefare accounts is the still high cost of the production process, which included some LCDs at their initial distribution.
A technical problem but more important in the process of improvements, is the duration of OLED screens which is currently lower than the LCD liquid crystal and plasma display panels. The organic material tends to lose its ability to emit light after several thousand hours of operation, against the tens of thousands of other two competing technologies.

I'm really folding?

The OLED technology allows to build the display so thin that you can actually bend and roll!
Some prototypes have already been built.

The name?

The OLED display conduct current in one direction only, thus behaving in a manner similar to a diode. Here qundi explained the name of O-LED, by analogy with the LED.

From what has been created?

Already in 1987 were presented the first efficient and low voltage display by Ching Tang and Steve Van Slyke. Initially these OLED screens require power supply voltages are too high (about 100 V) but succissivamente tensoni we arrived at around 10V, making them ideal for marketable equipment.
Due to some production problems, including the extreme precision with which the electrodes were to be built, otherwise a strong inefficiency of the display. This explains the long delay in the sale are coming in 2003 thanks to its digital camera and Kodak LS633.

Difference between LED and OLED?
All produce light and two by means of semiconductors, are able to create color effects considerably better than conventional lamps and light sources are at very low consumption.
However, there are many differences LED and OLED to start from the way in which they are constructed, for the type of light emanating and for their use, and are integrated with each other as to the possibilities of application.

They are already on the market?

Yes! different products in various categories already use OLED screens, especially in mobile phones and digital frames in which the dimensions in inches are reduced because of the cost of the production process.
The first TV commercial is the Xel-1, 11-inch Sony.

In research on OLED technology, in addition to large companies who place directly on emrcato products such as mobile, TV and monitors, there are several small companies that deal with specific diricerche.

An example is the British Lomox , who was born in 2007, defines a "OLED development company", and has a laboratory nell'University of Glamorgan in Wales. They own companies like this that provide some patents for technologies that will animate the products marketed by electronics giants; to this page we can see the kind of research that are carried out, although for obvious reasons of industrial secrecy does not There are hints too specific.

A press release also talks about recent research on the wallpaper, it's bright walls that can directly illuminate the rooms of the buildings, with advantages on both operating costs, with very low supply voltages ottenubili even with ordinary batteries, and the quality lighting that will look more natural.

OLED TV? spread only in 2015

Move forward, and much, presumably the date when we will see OLED TVs and other screens of this kind on the market in large numbers and with generous measures in inches.
Barry Young, Director of the OLED Association has even spoken of 2015, having anchored the high cost of production of the panels, which are so far available only in tablet PCs and smart phones in high-end, or screens in the OLED TV Sony's 15-inch XEL.
The decision of houses like Sony, LG and Samsung to slide from year to year the mass production of TV screens from 32 inches and over, especially weighing the economic crisis, so better to play safe with revitalization of LCD panels with LED TV , whose production cost is much lower and allows a good improvement in all parameters of quality of a televisionem for anyone who needs to change the TV are now the best compromise between quality, price and consumption.
